ATS-Friendly Resume Format: Template and Guidelines 2026
Most large companies use Applicant Tracking Systems to screen resumes before humans see them. If your resume is not ATS-friendly, you will be rejected regardless of your qualifications. Here is exactly how to format your resume for ATS compatibility.
ATS Formatting Rules
Use standard section headings: Professional Experience, Education, Skills, Certifications. Use a standard font: Arial, Calibri, Tahoma, or Georgia. Font size 10-12 for body text. Save as PDF (most ATS systems read PDFs reliably in 2026). Do not use headers or footers — ATS often misses content in these. Do not use tables or columns — the parser will read content in the wrong order. Do not use images, icons, or graphics. ATS cannot read text inside images.
Keyword Strategy
Include keywords from the job description throughout your resume. Focus on skills, tools, and industry terms. Use both acronyms and full terms (SEO and Search Engine Optimization). Do not keyword-stuff — the ATS can detect unnatural keyword density and may flag your resume. Include keywords naturally in your bullet points.
Simple Template
Your Name | Phone | Email | LinkedIn. Professional Summary: 3-4 lines. Skills: Comma-separated list of relevant tools and skills. Professional Experience: Job title, company, dates. 4-6 bullet points per role with quantifiable achievements. Education: Degree, school, year. This format passes every major ATS system.
