Informational Interviews: How to Request and Conduct Them

May 2026 · 7 min read · 🚀 Career

What Is an Informational Interview?

An informational interview is a conversation with a professional in your target field or company where you seek advice and insights ' not a job. It's one of the most effective networking strategies because it's low-pressure for both parties and often leads to opportunities through the relationships it builds.

How to Request an Informational Interview

Keep it brief: Your request should be 4-5 sentences max. Introduce yourself, explain why you're reaching out to them specifically, and be clear about what you're asking for. "I'm exploring career paths in product management and was impressed by your journey from engineering to PM at [Company]. Would you be open to a 15-minute call to share your perspective?"

Make it easy to say yes: Offer flexibility on timing and format (phone, video, or email). Suggest a specific time frame. "I'm available Tuesday or Thursday afternoon this week. A quick 15-minute call would be incredibly helpful."

How to Conduct the Interview

Be prepared: Research the person, their company, and their industry before the conversation. Have 5-7 thoughtful questions prepared. "What does a typical day look like in your role?" or "What skills have been most important to your success?"

Listen more than you talk: The ratio should be about 70% them talking, 30% you. Your goal is to learn, not to pitch yourself. Let the conversation flow naturally and follow interesting threads.

End gracefully: Respect their time. End at exactly the agreed-upon time unless they extend the conversation. Thank them sincerely and ask if there's anyone else they'd recommend you speak with.
