Nursing resumes sit at the intersection of clinical expertise and patient-centered care. Healthcare hiring managers scan for specific certifications, skills, and experience β but they also look for compassion, communication ability, and cultural fit. A great nursing resume hits both targets.
Open with Licensure and Certifications
Unlike most industries, nursing requires your credentials to be front and center. Include your RN license number, state of issuance, and expiration date near the top of your resume. List all active certifications (BLS, ACLS, PALS, CCRN, etc.) with renewal dates. If these aren't immediately visible, your resume gets passed over.
Showcase Clinical Experience by Specialty
Group your experience by clinical area: ICU, ER, Med-Surg, Pediatrics, etc. For each role, include unit type, bed count, patient acuity, and your specific responsibilities. Use action verbs: "managed," "assessed," "coordinated," "administered," "educated." Quantify where possible: "Managed 6 high-acuity patients per shift in a 24-bed cardiac ICU."
Highlight Soft Skills with Examples
Nursing is technically demanding but emotionally complex. Hiring managers want to see that you can handle both. Weave soft skills into your bullet points: "De-escalated anxious family members during critical care situations" or "Mentored 4 new graduate nurses through 12-week orientation program." These examples prove competence beyond clinical skills.

Include Continuing Education
Healthcare evolves fast. Show that you stay current by listing relevant CEUs, conferences attended, and professional development. Specialized training (wound care, trauma nursing, infection control) sets you apart from other applicants.
Tailor for the Unit or Facility
A resume for a Level 1 trauma center differs from one for a community clinic. Study the job description. If the hospital emphasizes shared governance, highlight your committee participation. If it's a teaching hospital, feature your precepting experience. Match their language.
